 i
am the only
american undergrad
at a japanese university (tokyo international university), and i live
in
saitama (northwest of tokyo). i have loved pokemon since it first hit
america
and it was pokemon that first sparked my love for japan. although i am
not hardcore otaku and i don't watch much anime, i watch pokemon to
this
day and will always love it.
in 9th grade i
downloaded
a small bad quality 1997-ish mpeg of the original opening theme in
japanese,
and my eyes lit up and i decided it was the coolest language i ever
heard.
when i got to high school i started studying japanese, and now my
everyday
life happens in this language.
and when people
ask how it
all started i have to answer the truth... *with a dramatic pause* pokemon.
although it is
not so strange
a thing... even now in japan the moms you see at the tokyo pokemon
center
were pokefans themselves, and now bring their children to buy up the
toys
and eat the cookies...
just to go in and
buy some
action figures and plushies and a DVD or little whatnots, we have
waited
1 to 2 hours to get into the center. that is the pokemon fandom in
japan.
so yeah. i still
sit in front
of my TV every thursday night for the new DP episode and that started
in
middle school for me.
